For the Love of the Game


This is Kaiya Kelly on the move at the end of year Basketball Break-up for the Sunnybank Hurricanes Basketball Club on 06 December 2014. At about this time Michael needed to hang up the whistle and stop being a Coach for a while, to be a Daddy. Knowing that at some point, he would come back (but mostly if the girls were interested). Basketball is something that people think force on our kids, but the truth of the matter is, that it won't matter if they do Basketball or not. 

The truth of it is, this has never been about getting to the NBA and making a Champion. It never will be. 

This is about the fundamentals. 

This is about learning how to be a part of a team. This will help in work, family, life, and in being a citizen of the world. 

This is about friendship. The friendship, the heartbreak, the elation, and the love that stays with us and changes us forever through the people that we play with.  

This is about fun. It about being so fun that when the hard stuff hits, we want more, we look into the eyes of challenge and say 'BRING IT ON!". 

This is about the realisation that the biggest competition in life, and the only one that will ever truly count, is the one you have with yourself. 

This is about mindset, and choosing yours. It's about knowing what mindset you want to develop and work on achieving. The mindset that you have in the present and the mindset you take into the future, in every facet of your life can be decided here. 

This is about synchronisation. Synchronising your mind, your body, your game. Knowing that it is all connected and finding the harmony of every element and bringing to life the most powerful energy within you. 

This is about understanding your impact on others, your leadership, your influence, your compassion, and your kindness. This is about wanting the best for others and celebrating their achievements. Knowing that it inspires us to also be our best selves.

This is about learning. A lifetime can be dedicated to this topic, this game, and there will always be more to learn, and another level to take it. 

This is about testing ourselves, and stepping outside of our comfort zone, so often, that we are comfortable being uncomfortable. 

This is about gratitude and giving, and being a part of the village. The next generation, and understanding that as much as we fool ourselves, our kids give more than we will give them. They give without condition, they trust us unconditionally. This is about us earning their respect and love.

This is about love. Love for a Game. The love we have for this game. If there is one thing, we want our girls to learn, it is that this game was never as important as the lessons listed about. We love this game because it facilitates the learning of the FUNDAMENTALS of life. We will never love this game more then we love our girls, and the kids that play this beautiful game. 

The stories here are about the love of this game but don't be fooled. It's more than a game, because Basketball facilitates life lessons. AND WE ARE ALL IN!!!!!

In our time at Hurricanes, I was really reluctant to share photos of others, but that tells so much of the story. So here I am being brave and sharing but really writing to the girls here in this forum. I can track the readers, and essentially, it's just us here. So here is the story, here are the photos. Here is our love of the game.  We are going a lot more local and this was our trials day with the Wynnum Jets. An organisation powered by volunteers and locals, founded in 2009. We had hoped that there would be kids from school, and more girls for Kirra's team. Two out of two. So far, so good.  Now we have met the organisers here before. Diary Entry 28 January 2021: The start of something new

...... Flashback from 28 January 2021 Facebook / Instagram Post from 28 January 2021 This could be the start of something new..... first Basketball training today. It's been 5 years since coaching for Michael. It was good fun. Fast forward to 27 December 2021........... Looking back. Ooohhhh the emotion! It was super charged energy in the car, as we drove to Basketball training for the first time. I posted on social media because I didn’t want to forget the moment (and the date) but it’s taken a whole year and a couple of Basketball seasons for me to be ready to write the Basketball stories.   I remember Kaiya breaking down in the car from the pressure, even thought we were holding back as much as we could, she still sensed it. Michael remembers Kaiya freaking out and being in shock that Daddy might beat her in this. Diary Entry 25 March 2021: Pure awesomeness

On 25 March At basketball training I said hello Alex (7 years old), how are you? He replied "I'm surpassing my potential!. Then he showed me his move, dribbled the ball between his legs (with some fumbles), twisted around and took a jump shot.  This is why we do it.  These kids are pure awesomeness.
